Body & HealthFact
Your gut wall holds more nerve cells than your spinal cord.
The human enteric nervous system contains some 500 million neurons – roughly five times the spinal cord's estimated 100 million. It controls gut movement and secretion on its own; in experiments it keeps working even when the vagus nerve is severed.
Useful: That's why specialists call the gut a nervous system of its own, not just plumbing.
