Body & HealthFact
Fibre isn't food for you – it's food for your bacteria.
What your own enzymes can't split, gut bacteria ferment in the colon. That produces short-chain fatty acids, mainly acetate, propionate and butyrate. Butyrate is the main energy source of colonocytes – the cells lining your colon wall. So you're feeding a middleman that supplies your gut wall.
Useful: "Indigestible" only means: not digestible by you.
