From 1 to 8 billion people in just 220 years.

Around 1800, roughly 1 billion people lived on Earth. The 2 billion mark came around 1927, 4 billion in 1974. In November 2022 the United Nations marked the symbolic "Day of 8 Billion". Growth is slowing clearly, though: going from 7 to 8 billion took twelve years, and the UN expects the next billion to take longer.

Useful: World population is still growing, but ever more slowly; the "explosion" image is outdated.
