How to find any word's origin in 2 minutes.
Open wiktionary.org, type the word and scroll to the 'Etymology' section. There you'll find the chain: English 'window' comes from Old Norse 'vindauga', 'wind-eye'. Click the source word and repeat until you reach a reconstructed form marked with an asterisk, such as '*ph₂tḗr'. The asterisk means: unattested, inferred from comparison.
Useful: A word whose origin you know is harder to forget and easier to spell.
