Language & WorldHow it works

How to stress any Spanish word correctly – with two rules.

Rule 1: if the word ends in a vowel, n or s, stress the second-to-last syllable: ca-SA, ha-BLAN, LI-bros. Rule 2: if it ends in any other consonant, stress the last: ciu-DAD, ha-BLAR. Anything that breaks these rules gets a written accent: te-LÉ-fo-no, ca-FÉ, ÁR-bol. The accent isn't decoration; it marks an exception.

Useful: No accent mark means the two rules apply, without exception.
