Language & WorldFact
At 6 months you could hear more sounds than ever again.
Until about 8 months, babies can tell apart nearly every sound contrast in every language, such as two Hindi consonants that sound identical to English-speaking adults. Between 10 and 12 months, that ability fades for sounds absent from the surrounding language. The brain specialises in what it hears.
Useful: That's why adults struggle with the German 'ü' or the Spanish rolled 'r'.
