Oxygen was once Earth's deadliest pollutant.

About 2.4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria began releasing oxygen in bulk. For most life at the time the gas was toxic, and much of it died off. Oxygen also stripped methane from the air, and Earth cooled and froze over. Yet this "catastrophe" is what made energy-hungry complex life like you possible.

Useful: The biggest environmental change in Earth's history came from living things, not volcanoes or asteroids.
