Every one of your cells houses former bacteria.

Mitochondria, the power plants of your cells, were free-living bacteria about two billion years ago. An ancestral cell swallowed them and never digested them. They still carry their own circular DNA and multiply by dividing. You inherit them almost entirely from your mother, via the egg cell.

Useful: Mitochondrial DNA lets scientists trace maternal lineages across millennia.
