Science & TechFact
You have fewer genes than a rice plant.
Humans carry only about 20,000 protein-coding genes. Before the Human Genome Project, estimates ran to 100,000. Rice has around 40,000; a water flea has over 30,000. Complexity doesn't come from gene count but from how genes are combined, spliced, and switched on and off over time.
Useful: A gene is more a part than a blueprint: regulation makes the difference.
