Science & TechFact
For every human there are 2.5 million ants.
A 2022 analysis estimates 20 quadrillion ants on Earth, a 2 followed by 16 zeros. Together they weigh in at around 12 megatons of carbon. That is roughly a fifth of the biomass of all humans, but more than all wild birds and wild mammals combined.
Useful: To understand ecosystems, look at the small players: in many regions they move more soil than earthworms.
