Mind & EverydayHow it works
How motivation arises when nobody's paying you.
Deci and Ryan identified three basic needs that feed intrinsic motivation: autonomy, meaning you choose; competence, meaning you improve and notice it; relatedness, meaning you act for or with others. Remove one and enjoyment turns into duty. External rewards can even backfire: people paid for an activity they love often do it less freely afterwards.
Useful: When motivation dips, ask: where am I missing choice, progress or connection?
