Body & HealthMental model
Adaptation isn't free. It runs up a bill.
Bruce McEwen and Eliot Stellar coined the term allostatic load in 1993. Homeostasis is the stable target state; allostasis is the body's anticipatory readjusting. When that readjusting stays switched on, the strain accumulates. It is measured as an index of markers from the hormonal, cardiovascular, immune and metabolic systems.
Useful: The model explains why chronic strain shows up in numbers long before it shows up as a feeling.
