Not every study carries the same weight.

From the bottom up: expert opinion, case report, cross-sectional survey, case-control study, cohort study, randomised controlled trial, and at the top systematic review and meta-analysis. Critics object that the pyramid grants RCTs too much authority and that not every question can be answered by randomising.

Useful: For any health headline, ask first: which rung is the underlying study standing on?
