Language & WorldFact
The colour orange has only existed since oranges arrived.
In English, "orange" as a colour name is first recorded in 1502, in a list of clothes bought for Margaret Tudor. Before that the shade was simply "yellow-red" (Old English ġeolurēad) or filed under red. The colour is named after the fruit, whose name came via Italian and Old French from Sanskrit.
Useful: Robin redbreast, red fox, red squirrel: many "red" things in English are orange by today's standards because the word didn't exist yet.
