Language & WorldFact
A patch of land no country wants.
Bir Tawil, 2,060 km² of desert between Egypt and Sudan, is claimed by nobody. The reason: two boundary lines from 1899 and 1902. Whoever accepts one gets the valuable Hala'ib Triangle on the Red Sea but loses Bir Tawil. Both countries want Hala'ib, so each gives up the smaller plot.
Useful: Border disputes are almost always about the valuable bit; the worthless bit sometimes just falls through the cracks.
