Science & TechFact
A jellyfish can turn itself back into a juvenile.
Turritopsis dohrnii is only about 4.5 millimetres across. When injured, starving or old, it rebuilds its cells and reverts from the adult medusa stage to the polyp, its juvenile form. This cell conversion is called transdifferentiation. In theory it can repeat endlessly; in practice most die first, eaten or diseased.
Useful: 'Biologically immortal' only means not dying of ageing. It is no help against predators.
