Science & TechFact
A litre of osmium weighs 22.6 kilograms.
Osmium is the densest stable element: 22.587 grams per cubic centimetre, twice as dense as lead. Iridium trails by a hair at 22.562; which one leads was settled only by X-ray crystallography in the 1990s. Because of its hardness, osmium alloys sit where wear threatens, such as the tips of fountain pens.
Useful: A 10 cm cube of osmium would weigh 22.6 kg, barely liftable with one hand.
