How to soften rock-hard avocados in two days.

Bananas, apples, tomatoes and avocados keep ripening after harvest because they release the gas ethylene, a plant hormone. Put an avocado in a paper bag with an apple or banana and the gas builds up, speeding the ripening. Strawberries, grapes and citrus hardly respond: they ripen only on the plant.

Useful: The reverse also holds: store bananas away from other fruit or everything turns mushy faster.
