Science & TechFact
The question "Can machines think?" is 76 years old.
In 1950 Alan Turing proposed a game in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence": a person chats in writing with an unseen partner and must guess whether a human or a machine is replying. If the machine fools people regularly, Turing argued, the question of "thinking" is practically settled. He predicted it for the year 2000.
Useful: The test measures deception, not understanding; that remains the core criticism today.
