Science & TechFact
The Sahara fertilizes the Amazon across an entire ocean.
Every year, winds carry many millions of tonnes of Saharan dust across the Atlantic, much of it from the Bodélé Depression in Chad, the bed of a dried-up lake. The dust contains phosphorus, which Amazon rainfall constantly washes out of the soil. The desert thus replaces a nutrient the rainforest would otherwise lose.
Useful: Ecosystems are linked across continents; if the desert climate changes, the rainforest feels it.
