Science & TechFact

Most plants have business partners underground.

About 80 percent of land plant species live with mycorrhizal fungi. Fungal threads run through soil far more finely than roots, delivering water and phosphorus; the plant pays in sugar from photosynthesis. The partnership is over 400 million years old and helped plants colonize land.

Useful: Heavy tilling or over-fertilizing wrecks the network, and plants often grow worse.
