Science & TechFact
No tree can grow taller than about 130 metres.
A tree does not pump water. Evaporation in the leaves draws it up from the roots as one continuous thread. With every metre, tension rises through gravity and friction until the topmost leaves barely grow. In 2004 researchers climbed California's tallest redwoods and calculated a limit of 122 to 130 metres from their measurements.
Useful: The record tree Hyperion stands around 116 metres, close to the physical ceiling.
