Three lines, one obvious answer, and still many gave the wrong one.
In 1951 Solomon Asch asked participants which of three lines matched a reference line. The task was trivial. But the others in the room, secretly actors, unanimously named the wrong line. Result: on 37 percent of the critical trials participants went along with the error, and three quarters did so at least once. A single dissenter cut conformity dramatically.
