In 1637 a flower bulb cost ten years of a craftsman's wages.
In the Netherlands, rare tulip bulbs became objects of speculation in 1636/37. Single bulbs changed hands for more than ten times a craftsman's yearly wage, often as futures contracts on bulbs still in the ground. In February 1637 buyers suddenly vanished and prices collapsed.
Useful: When everyone buys only to resell at a higher price, the price no longer supports itself.
