Isaac Newton lost a fortune. Not to physics, to stocks.
In 1720 shares of the South Sea Company in London rose eightfold within months, driven by rumours of trade monopolies. Newton sold early at a profit, bought back in as prices kept climbing, and reportedly lost £20,000 after the crash. He is quoted as saying he could calculate the motion of the stars but not the madness of men.
