Money & WorkFact
A steel box changed the world economy more than the internet.
In 1956 trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean loaded 58 containers onto a converted tanker. Before that, dockworkers hauled every crate by hand and ships sat in port for days. The standardised container cut loading costs by over 90% and made shipping a T-shirt from Asia cheaper than sewing it next door.
Useful: Global supply chains exist because transport costs almost nothing anymore.
