Money & WorkHow it works

The small number on the shelf that exposes every price trick.

In the EU, retailers must show the unit price next to the selling price, meaning the price per kilogram, litre or piece. It's usually in small print under the big price. Compare only that number: the family-size muesli at €4.49 can cost more per kilo than the small pack at €2.29. Brand versus own-label also becomes comparable in seconds.

Useful: Bigger isn't automatically cheaper; the unit price tells the truth.
