How the assembly line turned 12 hours into 93 minutes.
Until 1913 at Ford, the car stood still and workers walked to it with parts. Then Ford reversed the principle: the chassis moves on a chain past stationary workers, each performing one task, with parts arriving via chutes. Assembly time for a chassis dropped from 12.5 hours to 93 minutes. The chain now set the pace.
Useful: Bring the work to the person rather than the person to the work, and you save the walking.
