Four teenagers and a dog found 17,000-year-old art.
In September 1940, four teenagers in the Dordogne discovered the Lascaux cave after their dog had sniffed out a hole beneath an uprooted tree. Its walls carry over 600 painted animals, mostly horses, deer and aurochs, about 17,000 years old. Because visitors' breath damaged the paintings, the original has been closed since 1963; what you visit today is a replica.
Useful: Humans were painting for more than ten thousand years before the first writing appeared.
