An air raid on market day became the most famous anti-war painting.
On 26 April 1937, the German Condor Legion and Italian aircraft bombed the Basque town of Gernika for several hours on a market day. It was one of the first area bombings of civilians in Europe. Within weeks Pablo Picasso painted his 3.5 by 7.8 metre canvas "Guernica" for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Paris World's Fair.
Useful: Art can keep an event in memory longer than any report.
