Body & HealthFact
Exactly one human disease has been eradicated.
The last naturally occurring smallpox case was diagnosed on 26 October 1977 in Ali Maow Maalin, a hospital cook in Merca, Somalia. A commission certified eradication on 9 December 1979, and the World Health Assembly confirmed it on 8 May 1980. Smallpox is estimated to have killed up to 300 million people in the 20th century.
Useful: The win came not from mass vaccination alone but from tracking down every single outbreak.
