“Could you patent the sun?”

In 1955 Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was approved after a trial with 1.8 million children. Asked who owned the patent, he replied: “The people. Could you patent the sun?” US cases fell from 58,000 in 1952 to 161 in 1961.

Useful: Today polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
