Body & HealthHow it works
How one sound yields two blood pressure numbers.
The cuff squeezes the arm artery shut. As pressure is slowly released, blood spurts through again the moment the pressure reaches the systolic value – the flow turns turbulent and taps audibly. When the sounds vanish, blood flows smoothly again: that is the diastolic value. Nikolai Korotkov described them in 1905.
Useful: You aren't hearing the heart, but turbulence in a partly squeezed artery.
