Body & HealthFact
Endurance training builds new power plants into your cells.
Mitochondria are the cell's power plants; using oxygen, they turn sugar and fat into the energy carrier ATP. Regular endurance exercise activates the regulator PGC-1α, which instructs the cell to build more and larger mitochondria. Within about 6 weeks their density in muscle can rise markedly. The result: you burn more fat at the same pace and tire later.
Useful: The effect is reversible: after weeks without training, mitochondrial numbers shrink again.
