How to turn coordinates into kilometres in your head.

A degree of latitude is always about 111 km, 110.6 km at the equator to 111.7 km at the poles; one arc minute is 1.853 km, exactly one nautical mile. Degrees of longitude shrink with latitude: 111.3 km at the equator, 71 km at 50° north, zero at the pole. Rule of thumb: degrees times 111 times cosine of latitude.

Useful: The third decimal place of a coordinate is about 100 m, the fourth about 10 m.
