Munich means 'by the monks'.
In 1158, a charter of Emperor Barbarossa mentions the place as 'Munichen', Old High German for 'by the monks'. A monastic settlement at a bridge over the Isar was the city's seed. To this day the city's coat of arms shows a monk, the 'Münchner Kindl'. Compare Mönchengladbach, which spells the monks out in full.
Useful: Coats of arms are often picture puzzles for the town's name.
