Science & TechFact
A tsunami in open sea is one metre tall and faster than a jet.
In the deep ocean a tsunami races at over 800 km/h yet stands only about one metre high, with a wavelength of up to 200 kilometres. A ship never notices it. Near the coast shallow water slows it to under 80 km/h, the wave compresses to under 20 kilometres and grows enormously in height instead.
Useful: If the sea suddenly pulls far back, that is a tsunami warning: head for high ground immediately.
