Science & TechFact
The solar system's tallest mountain is too flat to admire.
Olympus Mons on Mars rises about 22 kilometres, roughly two and a half times the height of Everest. Its base spans around 600 kilometres, about the area of Poland. The slopes are only a few degrees steep. Standing on it, you wouldn't see a mountain at all, because the summit lies beyond the horizon.
Useful: The volcano grew so huge because Mars has no plate tectonics: the crust never drifts away from the hotspot.
