Half the nitrogen in your body came out of a factory.
Since 1913 the Haber-Bosch process has squeezed nitrogen from air at 250 to 350 bar and around 500 °C into ammonia, the raw material for synthetic fertiliser. Nearly 50 percent of the nitrogen in human tissue now traces back to it. Without that fertiliser, the year 2000 harvest would have needed almost four times the land. The price: 1 to 2 percent of world energy use.
Useful: Bread, meat, milk: the proteins in them very likely contain nitrogen that passed through a reactor.
