Science & TechHow it works
Why your Wi-Fi crawls in the basement.
Wi-Fi mostly uses 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. The lower frequency has longer waves, passes through walls better and reaches farther, but offers only three non-overlapping channels and shares the band with microwaves and Bluetooth. 5 GHz is faster and less crowded, yet walls and floors weaken it much more.
Useful: Put the router in a central, open spot, not in a cupboard; use 2.4 GHz for distant rooms.
