Mind & EverydayFact
Why your deadline always takes longer than planned.
In 1994 Buehler and colleagues asked students when they'd finish their thesis. The average estimate was 34 days; reality was 56. Only 30 percent met their own deadline. You plan for the ideal case and forget that illness, waiting times and questions almost always interfere. The Sydney Opera House was ten years late.
Useful: Multiply your estimate by 1.5, or ask how long similar projects took before.
