Jeans weren't patented as trousers, but as a rivet.
Tailor Jacob Davis in Nevada reinforced work trousers with copper rivets at the pocket corners, where they always tore. Lacking money for a patent, he asked his fabric supplier Levi Strauss in San Francisco. On 20 May 1873 they received US patent 139,121 for an "Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings". That date counts as the birthday of jeans.
Useful: Often the product isn't new; the detail that makes it durable is.
