Body & HealthFact
Your stomach is acidic enough to attack metal.
Gastric juice has a pH of around 1.5 to 3.5, comparable to battery acid. The acid kills most germs in your food and unfolds proteins so enzymes can break them down. The stomach avoids digesting itself thanks to a mucus layer containing bicarbonate that neutralises acid at the wall, and because surface cells are replaced every few days.
Useful: The acid is a shield: most germs you swallow never make it past the stomach.
