Language & WorldFact
A language with no words for 'left' and 'right'.
Guugu Yimithirr, an Aboriginal language of northern Queensland, has no left, right, in front of or behind you. Everything is described with compass points: 'The cup is north of you.' Speakers must always know where north is, and they manage it even inside unfamiliar buildings. The word 'kangaroo' comes from this language.
Useful: What a language constantly demands, it trains in its speakers: here, an inner compass.
