Science & TechHow it works
How a computer rolls dice when all it can do is calculate.
A computer knows no chance. It starts with a number, the seed, and runs it through a formula; each result becomes the start value for the next. The sequence looks random but repeats exactly with the same seed. For passwords and encryption the operating system therefore collects real noise: mouse jitter, keystroke timing, fluctuations inside chips.
Useful: A game with the same seed builds the same world – that is exactly how shareable Minecraft maps work.
