Science & TechFact
What a kilowatt-hour really is, in muscle power.
One kilowatt-hour is 3.6 million joules. That lifts a one-tonne car about 370 metres, heats roughly 10 litres of water from 20 to 100 °C, or runs a 10-watt LED spotlight for 100 hours. A person can sustain about 100 watts on a bicycle, so generating one would take 10 hours of pedalling.
Useful: At 30 cents per kilowatt-hour, ten hours of your body's hard labour sells for 30 cents.
