Money & WorkFact
A price is a message nobody wrote.
Friedrich Hayek described in 1945 why prices are more than numbers: when the price of tin rises, thousands of firms worldwide know they should economise without knowing the reason, say a mine that has failed. Nobody has to collect or distribute the information. Precisely this dispersed knowledge is what no central planning agency could ever gather.
Useful: Price caps switch the message off; scarcity remains and shows up as an empty shelf instead.
