History & CultureHow it works
How to build a 44-metre dome with no scaffolding underneath.
Filippo Brunelleschi raised the Florence dome between 1420 and 1436 from over four million bricks – with no wooden centering, for which no forest would have sufficed. His tricks: a herringbone pattern that props each fresh brick against the nearest vertical rib, two shells instead of one, and four encircling chains of stone and iron.
Useful: When the standard method will not scale, change the method rather than the size.
