Reinforced concrete was invented for flower tubs.
Joseph Monier was a gardener at the Paris Tuileries who needed durable tubs for orange trees. He poured cement around an iron mesh and on 16 July 1867 patented iron-reinforced planters. Bridges followed in 1873, beams and railway sleepers in 1878 – the basis of every modern high-rise.
