The word algorithm is a man's name.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi worked in 9th-century Baghdad. His book on calculation appeared in Latin as "Algoritmi de numero Indorum" – and that Latinised form of his name became our word algorithm. His second work, "al-Jabr" from around 820, supplied the word algebra as well.
Useful: Words are fossils: they show which languages knowledge travelled through to reach us.
